YOYO: Soundwave 2013

I've always wanted to go for soundwave ever since the line up was announced back in september/october. I still remember sitting in my tutorial class, refreshing the page profusely and when the line up was announced I was like ok i'm getting those tix. But there was a lot of hesitation due to the crazy ticket prices, no one really listens to the same type of music as I do here in Melbourne, the tickets sold out in ten minutes of the release... bla bla bla a crapload of excuses.

But thanks to a shitty turn of events when I came back in January, and reminding myself about one of the resolutions I made, which was: YOYO (You're Only Young Once), I thought that this was kind of me putting myself out there, experiencing what a music festival with some of my favourite bands playing would feel like. So I managed to score some tickets and got nette to come along with me. (huge props to sher for convincing me that I should go for soundwave. wouldn't have gone without her pushing and encouragement)

Soundwave 2013, YOYO plan was a success. I had a wonderful time, rocked out to 7 bands, 3 full sets and had nette as great company for the whole day. All forms of shitty feelings and blergh just disappeared. I loved every single moment of Friday.

Tried to take as many photos as I could during the whole festival. But some of the photos were way too shaky so please excuse me. The people in the mosh pit were violent, excited and sometimes drunk. Thus, they pushed a lot and the photo quality sucks.

Nette commented on how beautiful the sky looked so I decided to take a photo. And attempt to take a photo of the huge crowd that came out of the train with us all heading towards soundwave.

First "pit" of the day: queuing for some merch at the merch tent underneath the hot sun. Nette and I got a tan from that. My shoulders to my arms are now officially a different colour.

If you look carefully the green signboard says: Under 18 and the red ones were all for above 18. The queues for the above 18 were massive and the under 18 ones had no queue. It was so amusing walking through the under 18 queue alone while everyone at the above 18 queue were staring at me.

First set of the day: Motion City Soundtrack
Didn't really take much of a listen to their tracks before but they were quite good live. The crowd was not too bad too.

But the minute MCS ended, everyone standing at the back were all starting to push to get in front for the next set, which was All Time Low. Man, the fans are crazy. Managed to get to the 3rd row and we got pushed around so much and my feet so trampled upon so many times as well I ended up with cuts and bruises.

Was so glad that this time around I was on Jack's side of the stage. Zack came over too and he was mucccchhh more interactive than he was in Singapore back in 2011, I was shocked. HAHA he was actually smiling and fist pumping and rara-ing the crowd and everything.

Note: do you notice this annoying hand on the right holding a god damn camera? IN THE 2ND ROW? This asshole did that shit for nearly 3 songs straight until someone shoved him to the back or he just disappeared or something. It was SO. ANNOYING. Like, people who want to record the performance, please piss off to the middle or something please don't stay in the first few rows because people in here want to actually listen and SEE the band. Put your camera on a damn tripod at the back of the crowd plz thx.

And starting now, the shaky pictures of the band members. People were pushing and shoving and we were going side to side back and forth non stop in the damn pit so I apologize for the shakiness.

Presenting to you: Rachel and Jeanette ALIVE from the moshpit of sweat. I literally came out soaking wet. SOAKING. My top was drenched, and my bag was drenched until the tickets inside were wet too. With sweat. From the people in the pit. My chucks got messed up with mud and there were cuts on my legs from idk where.
BUT it was a bloody good performance and Alex didn't even sound like he wasn't feeling well at all. It was perfect. Was quite bummed out that they didn't play Somewhere In Neverland though. :-(

The aftermath of ATL ^

So after ATL, nette and I had to take a break to take in everryttthinggg we just went through. And then decided to take a look at the blink stage because from where we were sitting we could hear "Small Things" live and it was amazing.
So we went, and I tried my best to take some pictures of the blink stage for Nicole, so NICOLE if you are reading this... the next few (fail) pictures are for you.
The stage was that far away and the crowd was piled up all the way up to here. Insane.

And then we headed back to stage 3 to see Sleeping With Sirens but decided on listening to the artist before them so we could get better places in the pit when SWS came out. (Aunty Tan on the prowl again) Came across this band called Ghost and all nette and I established throughout the 40 minutes of listening to their music was: 1. The drummer is really good, why can't we see their faces?
2. The lead singer is not wearing a mask, his face is painted.
3. Is that an upside down cross on this hat that he's wearing?
4. Are they even singing in english??!?!

A day later, nette googled that band up and apparently they sing black metal. And they're kind of satanic. We freaked out. LIKE HOW COULD WE NOT KNOW, THERE WAS UPSIDE DOWN CROSSES EVERYWHERE. (If you look carefully their backdrop shows a church with a gazillion upside down crosses and the lead singer is dressed like a pope.)
Well dumb people like us would only notice a good drummer and question if they were singing in english or not. (Apparently the lead singer was chanting a devil's chant) ((WTF))

Anyway creepy band aside, SWS came out after a while. And since I got really shagged by standing way up front for ATL, I thought maybe just standing in the middle and getting a good view of the stage would be good enough. Didn't know the crowd was going to be so big, so in the end I was still quite in front. SWS had the most number of moshes that occurred in a span of a 45-50 minute set. It was crazy.

So let me explain the pictures below. Kellin said since Melbourne was one of their best crowds on the whole soundwave tour, he wanted to come into the crowd and finish up his last song. But on 3 conditions. 1. No one rapes him. 2. Everyone will support him up and not tear him apart. 3. The crowd has to bring him back up on stage.

So he split the crowd into half. And came over to my side of the crowd. And this was the closest I could get to him..... meh still better than nothing I guess. Honestly was quite bummed out about his singing because I thought he would've sounded better. But really kudos to his screaming. I was really impressed because it was sooooo goooooood. So so so so good.

So after surviving SWS, we still had a bit of time before Pierce The Veil, so we headed over to the Paramore stage and we were wowed by the crowd. The crowd was literally packed all the way from the stage to the fricking pavillion (where I'm standing) and if you look behind, it would be another stage already. That's how big the crowd was.

Managed to catch "The Only Exception" and "Let The Flames Begin" which are two of my favourite songs from Paramore, so SCORE. Hayley sounds so perfect live it's hard to believe it actually is her real voice.

The above picture is taken from the side of the opposite stage form Paramore's. CAN YOU SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WENT TO WATCH PARAMORE :O

The stupidity of drunk people and their crazy ass moshpits.

So PTV came out a little bit late but their set was soooo bloody good I literally have no words. Vic sounded amazing live it was so impressive. And they played most of the songs I was dying to hear. T^T Jammed so hard to every song, screamed every lyric and jumped to everything. It was so fucking good I wanted to weep when A Match Into Water, Bulletproof Love and Caraphernelia played ok. It was so fucking uuummphhh live.

The crowd in PTV was the craziest out of the 3 that I was in, I swear. Everyone was pushing and jumping and knocking and hitting. There were some drunk idiots at the end that managed to push through to the 3-4th rows and try to start a mosh. And the crowd surfers got insane and everyone started to crowd surf on the last song, which was King For A Day and I was literally not giving a shit about them and just rocking out to that song. LIKE THEY PLAYING JUST LISTEN LA CROWD SURF SIMI SAI.

Collages of ATL and SWS that I made a while back to post on Insta.

This was how I looked like after surviving 3 of the craziest mosh pits and had one of the best times of my life. Def one of my highlights for 2013.

Headed to nette's place in College Square to crash and cook us some supper. We had maggi mee with broccoli, and tim tam slams. If you have never tried a tim tam slam, you need to. It will change your life, I'm not even kidding. Google that shit up now.

And on saturday my homeboi timmy and nette came over to disturb the hell out of me, causing me to do no shit for my lit essay.... ah well. Jammed out to alot of songs and catching up. Good times, good times. Really miss Tim in Palmerston, sigh. There's really no one to jam to songs at a ridiculously loud volume at 1am in the morning anymore. :-(

That was basically how my friday went down at Soundwave and how I spent my whole saturday dying from Post Concert Depression.

Today is Sunday and it's PCD day 2.
On another note, today is the day Nicole and Yingzhong leave for Shanghai for 5 weeks. So excited for the two of them!!
And today I also managed to oovoo Jamie and Nicole today after AGES of not seeing Jamie. Really miss that girlllll :-(
Tomorrow Jodie leaves for China as well. Hoping all my friends have an eventful holiday ahead for them! (While I slog my balls out for the remaining weeks of term 3 ha ha ha)

It's a long post, thanks for sticking it out with me you guys :')
